Compass Precision Operating Company Adds Tornos Multi-Spindle Machine

WESTFORD, MA – December 9, 2025 – Compass Precision made impressive investments in new machinery at many of its operating companies during the past year. But Bergeron Machine has arguably made the most extraordinary equipment addition.

Bergeron, which manufactures Swiss-styled turned components, officially announced Tuesday it has purchased, installed, and begun operating a Tornos Multi-Spindle Swiss Screw Machine.

Bergeron President Dave Giampa called the machine, which is more commonly used in Europe and very rare in the United States, the most technologically advanced piece of equipment available in Swiss-screw machining.

“This new machine is a beast,” explained Compass CEO Gary Holcomb. “It is the equivalent of going from paper spreadsheets to electronic ones.”

“I can’t think of a better example of Compass’s absolute commitment to making major CAPEX investments to serve customers better.”

The Tornos has eight spindles, all of which are faster than a spindle on a conventional Swiss machine. Each of the eight spindles on the Tornos perform a small portion of the operation on each job.

Essentially, eight cuts can happen at once, greatly enhancing productivity.

“It’s been a long and grueling process to get the machine set up. In fact, I’ve never gone through a longer process in terms of purchasing a machine,” Giampa said. “However, I think the reward for purchasing the machine is there in its ability to machine parts faster and increase our capacity in the facility.”

The Turnos is so big and powerful, Bergeron had to upgrade the building’s electrical power to get the machine running. While performing that upgrade, which now gives the operating company a 1250 amp service, Bergeron used a generator to help avoid disruptions with current customer demand.

Once the electrical upgrade was completed, Bergeron machinists required more training than average to begin operating the Tornos. Bergeron installed a new proprietary software, TB-DECO, which was a new experience for the company’s employees.

“Programming the Tornos Multi-Swiss is vastly different from the standard Swiss machines that we have here,” Bergeron Machine Operations Manager Dan Brown said. “The interface with TB-DECO is very user friendly and broken up in a way that’s easy to understand. But still different.

“The program goes directly to the machine from the computer, and it’s broken down so you can see each operation and what it’s doing.”

Tornos also offered hands-on training for the Bergeron machinists (CNC Set Up Machinist Pinara Ouk shown above right receiving personalized instruction from Tornos factory technician). The operating company went through a couple classroom days of training, and then had the opportunity to ask a Tornos technician questions at the new Swiss machine to become more proficient at programming the equipment.

As Bergeron’s president explained, the reward will be immense. The Tornos has the ability to replace 5-6 of the operating company’s previous pieces of equipment. On average, it will reduce cycle times on current jobs by about 80%.

This will vastly shrink Bergeron’s lead times and increase the shop’s capacity.

Founded in 1948, Bergeron Machine is located in Westford, MA, which is about 30 miles northwest of Boston. The 14,700-square foot facility specializes in precision Swiss-styled CNC machining.

Bergeron manufactures extremely tight tolerances and works with a variety of difficult-to-work-with materials such as Inconel, Monel and titanium.

Compass purchased Bergeron Machine as its eighth operating company in April 2023. It was the parent company’s first operating company in Massachusetts.

Compass acquired Pocasset Machine on Cape Cod in July 2025 as its ninth operating company. The parent company’s most recent acquisition was Trutron Corporation in Troy, Michigan in November.
